Rare Cheever Meaders Georgia 4 Gallon Vintage Stoneware Churn Southern Pottery

$395.00
Southern Folk Art Pottery Cheever Meaders Double Handle Four Gallon Churn Members of the Meaders family have been making pottery in the Mossy Creek area of Cleveland, Georgia since 1892, when John Milton Meaders founded the family pottery business there. Cheever Meaders (1887-1967) was the husband of Arie Meaders and the father of Lanier, John, Reggie, and Edwin Meaders and Ruby Meaders Irvin, all involved in making pottery. When Cheever became ill, Lanier took over the business in 1967 and continued to produce traditional, wood-fired, alkaline glazed pottery into the 1990's. Offered here is a dark green alkaline glaze four gallon churn with one lug handle and one strap handle. The number "4" is incised under the lug handle, indicating capacity. The churn stands 16 3/4 inches high and is 10 inches wide. The opening at the top of the churn is 6 3/4 inches wide. This is a heavy, substantial piece of pottery, and there is some evidence of wear at the top--perhaps it was used for churning. Like most Cheever pieces, the churn is unsigned. Provenance: purchased from a Southern Folk Pottery Collectors Society auction. Authenticated by Billy Ray Hussey as the work of Cheever Meaders. This is a wonderful piece of Southern Folk Art, and Southern Folk Pottery History, for the collector who wants the very best!
