Excellent Five-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Cobalt Double Flower Decoration, Stamped "O.L. & A.K. BALLARD / BURLINGTON, VT", circa 1865, ovoid churn with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a bold (rarely seem) large brushed design with double flowers. Excellent form, size, and decoration. The floral design on this churn is over 12” long. Rim is excellent, which would hold a lid. A few hairline cracks, small amount of loss in the lower flower. A large, fairly-thin fork-shaped crack to body on reverse. H 18".
This is in better condition than the one that sold at Crocker Farm for $1400 6 years ago. I have researched multiple but have not found any others having sold in recent years that are as striking and vibrant as this. Fabulous northeast pottery, Vermont.
Americana 19th century.
